How to visit Huemul Glacier A step-by-step guide to Patagonia’s serene short hike

The Complete Huemul Circuit Trekking Guide, Patagonia Travel

If you’re in El Chaltén and looking for a peaceful, lesser-known hike, the trail to Huemul Glacier checks every box: easy, scenic, and refreshingly uncrowded. In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan the perfect day trip to this tranquil glacier.

Getting there: The glacier is 35 km from El Chaltén. A round-trip bus costs 25,000 pesos and can be arranged through your hotel or companies like Zona Austral. Buses depart around 8 AM or 9:30 AM and wait for you at the trailhead for the return trip around 4 PM.

Entrance fee and facilities: The trailhead sits on private land, requiring a 10,000 peso entrance fee (cash or card accepted). Facilities include restrooms, parking, and a kiosk with snacks and souvenirs.

The hike: The 3-km roundtrip hike gains 215 meters in elevation, with the last stretch being the steepest. Most of the trail is shaded and serene, with occasional waterfalls and forest views. The glacier and its bright turquoise lake appear suddenly and dramatically—especially stunning on sunny days.

For extra adventure, hike the short side trail to an overlook above the lake for panoramic views. This is an easygoing but rewarding outing that deserves a spot on any Patagonia itinerary.
